The Florida Museum will open the “Discovery Zone”, a new, interactive permanent exhibit on July 17.  Designed for children 8 and under, the exhibition provides opportunities for families to discover and learn together.  It includes an area for infants and toddlers, as well as a vast array of touchable objects.  See a fully articulated human skeleton and a replica of a T. Rex skull. View items under microscopes and enter a forest habitat.  The exhibit is free. For more information, visit Florida Museum or call 352-846-2000.

UF students receive free admission to A T. rex Named Sue with their Gator 1 card. The Museum will be open to the public from 6 to 10 p.m. The panel discussion starts at 7 p.m., followed by the movie. Parental discretion is advised.

Now through Sept 1, 2014, the Florida Museum of Natural History is offering a visiting exhibit, Wolf to Woof.

“Wolf to Woof” is the world’s largest exhibition on the history, biology and evolution of dogs. This family-friendly exhibit reveals the fascinating history of dogs, their connection with wolves and what makes them man’s best friend. Four themed areas feature artifacts, multimedia displays, photomurals and dioramas on wild canines and modern dog breeds. Explore interactive hands-on components such as a “howling area” and “guess what dogs are saying” activity, or go nose-to-nose against a dog’s great sense of smell. Learn how dogs have secured a special place in human society as an incredibly diverse and versatile species, serving as hunters, herders, guards and companions.

Learn about the incredible adaptability of dogs and how their appearances have changed over time, naturally and due to breeding by humans. Also follow the geographical origins and history of some domestic breeds, wild canines and extinct relatives.

Explore why domesticated and wild canine species behave the way they do. Compare and contrast the behaviors of wolves and domesticated dogs while exploring human intrigue with dogs.

Analyze this special bond and find out more about how dogs help mankind  and climb into an avalanche scene to experience what it’s like to be saved by a search-and-rescue dog.

Explore the issues humans pose for dogs and what we can do to solve these problems. Learn about responsible pet ownership, the latest developments in veterinary science, wolf reintroduction to national parks and the fight to save the endangered Ethiopian wolf.

In 1513, when Juan Ponce de Leon reached the state and named it “La Florida,” it was ablaze with a rainbow of spring blossoms. This exhibit showcases stunning photography to commemorate 500 years of Florida’s unique wildflowers, which continue to play an important part in the state’s natural history and culture. The exhibit features 15 large-format photographs by Gainesville nature photographer John Moran, who roamed the state to capture the beauty and mystique of Florida’s original Garden of Eden.

sea turtle conversancyThe Florida Museum of Natural History celebrates World Sea Turtle Day with the Sea Turtle Conservancy this Saturday, June 14! Children and families are invited to tour the Museum’s sea turtle exhibit with staff from the Sea Turtle Conservancy. The free event features sea turtle specimens, a turtle library and stickers and bookmarks for all kids. Children also may create fun crafts to take home, meet sea turtle scientists and play turtle trivia for a chance to win a cool prize. Visitors will also have the opportunity to speak with researchers from the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research at UF from 2 to 4 p.m. about sea turtle conservation and careers in marine biology.

Come out to the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville and learn more about man’s best friend at Wolf to Woof: The Story of Dogs.  This family friendly exhibit begins this Saturday February 15th and runs until September 1st.  There will be four themed areas that will feature artifacts, multimedia displays, photo murals and dioramas on wild canines and modern dog breeds.

Here are a few of the exhibits that you will enjoy:

1. Dogs Come in All Shapes and Sizes.  Which teaches about the many different adaptations of the modern dog and the history of domestic breeds.

2.  A Little Wolf in Every Dog.  The exhibit will explain how humans have breed dogs to retain some wolf traits and how they eliminated some traits.

3.  Dogs Have Skills to Help Us.  Here you will learn more about that special bond humans and dogs and how they work together to help others.

4.  What Can We Do to Help Dogs?  Learn how you can help reduce the population of dogs in shelters and the latest developments in veterinary science.

This is and great exhibit that will be beginning in Gainesville this weekend.

Things to do Gainesville: Cruisin’ the Fossil Freeway!

The dinosaurs have come to Gainesville at the Florida Museum of Natural History.  Everyone will enjoy seeing celebrated artist Ray Troll’s depiction of early life on Earth.  Along with information from Paleontologist Kirk Johnson, you will learn about early life on planet Earth.  This exhibit has 30 fossils including a complete skeleton cast of the three-horned Triceratops, dinosaur and Albertosaurus.  Through Troll’s color prints and large-scale murals you can experience dinosaurs as you never have before.

As you stroll through the exhibit you will also be able to observe Florida Museum scientists in a functioning paleontology lab preparing fossils collected during research projects from around the world.  This exhibit will help you better understand the evolution of dinosaurs and what might have lead to their extinction.  There will also be times while the exhibit is in Gainesville where you will be able to ask questions of the scientists about the fossils and the work they are doing in the lab.

Enjoy this exhibit this summer before it cruises out of Gainesville!
