Things to do Gainesville: Visit Dudley Farm Historic State Park

October 4, 2010 · No Comments

Experience Florida farming in Gainesville with a visit to Dudley Farm Historic State Park.  On the farm you will be able to see how life was for three generations of the Dudley Family from the 1880s to the mid 1940s.  As you walk around the farm you will see the original farmhouse with original furnishings and the kitchen outbuilding from the 1880s.  There is also a general store and post office. The park staff will be dressed in period customs and doing daily activities like tending livestock and taking care of the crops.  Some of the crops that they grow are sugar cane and corn.  In the autumn the staff performs cane grinding, boiling and bottling.  Some of the heritage livestock that you will be able to see include Cracker cows and Barred Rock chickens.

After you have visited all the buildings and seen the animals you may want to take a hike on the nature trail where you can see deer, wild turkeys, and many local Gainesville birds.  Be sure to bring lunch so you can enjoy it in the beautiful surroundings of Dudley Farm at the picnic area.
